Department of Chemistry

Chair's Office

Welcome to the Chemistry Department at WSU!

We’re glad that you’re visiting with us, and we hope that you find the information that you are looking for here.  We believe that chemistry is “the central science”, and we’re excited about the transformational discoveries and educational advances that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni contribute to everyday.

If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited with us, you might be excited to learn that the faculty have identified three multidisciplinary areas for developing our programs.  In addition, we still have the traditional areas of chemistry.  We currently offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Chemistry, and our BS degree is certified by the American Chemical Society.

The Chemistry Department has grown to 22 tenure/tenure-track faculty positions with three additional instructional faculty.  Of the 22 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 30% are new hires at all ranks that have joined our department within the past 5 years.

Grant support within the department is now over $4 million dollars, an increase of more than 40% in the last 5 years.  Our graduate and undergraduate programs continue to grow.  You can learn more about our students and their activities by visiting the websites maintained by the Graduate Chemical Society, and the ACS Undergraduate Chemistry Club.  Worthy of note is that 85% of our graduate students receive research assistantships after their first or second year of study, and we have awarded scholarships to 45% of our current undergraduate majors.

Hiring additional new faculty and recruiting new students are the primary foci of the department.  If you are interested in joining us, we would be delighted to discuss the opportunities we currently have and expect in the future.  You can contact us by clicking here.

If you are an alumnus, we are anxious to hear from you.  Nikki Clark is  our contact person and she will be pleased to route your questions, comments, or concerns to the appropriate person.  If you wish to support any of our ongoing programs, we would be pleased to accept your donation.  The Chemistry Development Fund is a great place to invest in issues of immediate importance to the department.

So, whether you’re a prospective employee, prospective student, current student, alumnus, or friend of the department, we’re glad that you’re here.  Thank you for visiting, and please come again!

Sincerely,
K W Hipps, Ph.D.
