Magnetoelectrochemistry

Electrochemistry and magnetism individually have played important roles in addressing many analytical chemistry questions. The merging of electrochemistry and magnetism, however, is surprisingly uncommon, although they are ideally matched to make important contributions towards resolving challenging analytical problems. Permanent magnets are a low-cost, zero-energy tool which has been shown to induce beneficial and unexpected phenomenon, such as magnetohydrodynamics (magnetic field induced bulk fluid flow) and direct influence over rates and yields of reactions which involve radical species. Magnetoelectrochemistry is thus an exciting area because it has the opportunity by combining their individual elements—reactive interfaces, electrochemical potential, Lorentz forces—to lead not only to new phenomenon, but also applications in diagnostics.
