General Chemistry Laboratory Facilitator

The General Chemistry Laboratory Facilitator (WSU Civil Service title “Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 3”) oversees operations of the General Chemistry Laboratories, working day-to-day with the students, course instructors, teaching assistants, academic coordinator, and stockroom staff.  Duties include ensuring compliance with safety policies and practices; inspecting the laboratories after each lab session in order to evaluate TA performance; maintaining a checklist of equipment and reagents required for each lab experiment; instructing students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of laboratory equipment and instruments; being on-hand for consultations with the teaching assistants while the laboratories are occupied; troubleshooting General Chemistry experiments and issuing corrections/clarifications to teaching assistants and/or stockroom staff; assisting with the duties of the Academic Coordinator as necessary; and supervising evening laboratories (this responsibility is shared with the course instructors and will typically be limited to one evening per week).

  • Knowledge of laboratory policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Ability to perform and develop laboratory experiments.
  • Ability to write effective instructional materials at the undergraduate level.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution as applied to students and teaching assistants.
