Most commonly, the tests required for this diagnosis require trained personnel, expensive equipment, and travel (i.e., visiting a hospital or clinic). Unfortunately, this type of travel and\/or the lack of economic means prohibits many from beginning this diagnostic process. Beyond diagnostics, constant monitoring of key biomarkers\u2014or prescription medication levels\u2014during treatment is also important to ensure adequate care is being received. Standard benchtop electrochemical workstations are large, expensive and not suitable for use outside of well-equipped laboratories employing trained personnel. For these reasons, the development of simple to use devices \u2013 and the access to portable electrochemical readers \u2013 which can be used at the point-of-care for the determination of key analytes will be an important contribution to reliable patient care and early diagnosis.
