Topic: Responding to social demands on food safety and science education after the FDNPP: a ‘progress report’ after 2011
Abstract: After the FDNPP in March 2017, many research works in radioanalytical chemistry were conducted to solve environmental issues on wide-spread contamination of radioactivity from the FDNPP site. Food safety has concerned the public urging us to provide proper answers supported by today’s science. The speaker will present some topics responding to the social demands.
- Preparation of certified reference materials (CRMs) for precise determination of radiocesium in foods. Ensuring reliability of food analysis, several CRMs for food analysis were prepared by our team: rice, beef, etc. After certification of radioactivity, the CRMs were distributed to numerous institutions and organizations for reviewing their procedures and improving their handling. This assists to recover the reliability of scientific data on food safety.
- Environmental behavior of radiocesium in a lake ecosystem. The central cone in the caldera of Mt. Akagi volcano has a shallow lake, Onuma, which is a breeding site of Wakasagi fish. The monitoring of radioactivity in fish, water, plankton, sediments, mountain soils started in 2012. The radioactivity in fish and water declined quickly in the initial periods of monitoring, approaching to be constant, now. Transfer mechanism of cesium in the ecosystem would be discussed, briefly.
- Honey: a measure of environmental radioactivity in urban area. Radioactivity in honey taken from the bee-breeding nest in Tokyo decreased at the rate identical to that for rain in 2011. However, the extraordinarily high concentration of radiocesium was recorded in some cases in 2013. This suggests that most of radiocesium transported to honey just after FDNPP was soluble in water. Instead, particulate matters bearing radiocesium derived from FDNPP may dispersed sometimes even in the metropolitan area after no activity was found in rain.
