Properties of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide Under High Pressure Conditions

Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are common products of combustion and ubiquitous in the age of combustion.  Both compounds exhibit fascinating properties under high pressure and high temperature conditions.  Under these conditions, both undergo a number of phase transitions that possible applications for geochemistry and materials chemistry.  Fundamental work is ongoing in exploring these behaviors in a variety of mixtures and conditions, as many of the properties of these high-pressure phases remain undefined.  This literature review focuses on the existing body of work around each gas separately, as explored through the use of a diamond anvil cell to generate pressures in excess of 50 gigapascals as monitored via XRD and Raman spectroscopy.
