The remote computer is usually running a Linux or UNIX distribution. There are several X11 windows applications available for Microsoft Windows, but we are recommending xming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are using Linux on your personal computer, you do not need to install an X11 window server. X11 is supported by default in Linux. This is a simple tutorial on enabling X11 forwarding in Linux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Versions of OS X before&nbsp;10.6 included X11 support. If your version of OS X is 10.7 or later, you can install Apple\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/xquartz.macosforge.org\/landing\/\">XQuartz<\/a> software to support X11 windows.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-spacing-before--none wsu-border--add-left wsu-border--color-crimson-light wsu-color-background--gray-5 wsu-spacing-top--xxsmall wsu-spacing-bottom--xxsmall\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-spacing-bottom--none wsu-spacing-after--small wsu-font-size--xxmedium\"><strong>Update: <\/strong> Xming on Windows 8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-bottom--none wsu-font-size--medium wsu-spacing-after--none\">Some people report that connecting to a remote server using Xming on Windows 8 works sporadically. Sometimes you connect, sometimes you don\u2019t. If you are running Windows 8 and experiencing connection problems, try&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/vcxsrv\/\">this version of Xming<\/a>. It is compiled with Microsoft\u2019s C compiler. The installation instructions are very similar to this how-to.<\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-spacing-before--default\">How to install Xming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chem.wsu.edu\/fulmerit\/jukebox-3\/\">Connect to Chem-jukebox<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <strong>Jukebox &gt; PChem &gt; Xming<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Launch the <strong>Xming<\/strong> application (<strong>Xming-mesa-6-9-0-31-setup.exe<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the on-screen instructions in the install wizard to:\n<ul>\n<li>Select the full installation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept the default installation folder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept the default additional tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create an XLaunch Shortcut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use Xming\u2019s XLaunch application to create shortcuts to remote computers. The shortcut will remember the name of the remote computer, your remote user name, and launch any remote applications for you.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--sidebar-right\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<ol id=\"block-131305d8-58f6-4f2b-b51a-3f9c4ec466e6\">\n<li>Start the XLaunch application either from the Windows start menu or from the xming-mesa installation routine. XLaunch opens the display settings dialog box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose how Xming displays programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Start a program<\/strong>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<strong>Session type<\/strong>&nbsp;dialog box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the program you want to start on the remote computer, the name of the remote computer, and your user name on the remote computer. This example is for odin.chem.wsu.edu teaching cluster.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Xlaunch asks for parameter settings. Accept the default and click&nbsp;<strong>Next<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save your configuration in a location you will remember. For example, on the desktop. Image links to a larger version.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Xming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>XLaunch will start the X11 server and connect you to your remote computer, usually with ssh. Start any X11 application on your remote server and enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--sidebar-right\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<ol id=\"block-abd65de9-8eb8-44c7-92d9-f765ae4413eb\">\n<li>The ssh application will prompt you with a PuTTY security alert that asks you to accept the remote computer\u2019s host key. This only happens the first time you connect to the remote computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The application asks for your remote password. Enter the password and click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are connected to the remote computer. In this example, we are connected to dirac.chem.wsu.edu, running xterm.
