Safety Responsibilities of any Student, Researcher, or Employee working in a Lab

There is always a present danger working in any area, and due to the nature of a chemistry lab, the choices you make while working in the lab will not only effect you but those working around you and potentially anyone entering the lab after you.  Therefore the University has a few basic responsibilities for every employee or student working in a laboratory or around any hazardous materials.

  • Know and comply with all safety guidelines and policies required for the task assigned (before beginning.)
  • Report all unsafe work conditions to your supervisor, PI, department safety officer, or EH&S.
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment (Fume hoods, ect.) as trained.

This is the basic expectations of WSU, for anyone working in the department of chemistry you are also expected to finish all the proper department safety training along with any additional training your lab or course might require.
