History

1891-1928

Chemistry courses are offered as part of the three inaugural fields of study offered when the Washington State College opens its doors.

1929

The Department of Chemistry is created. The first PhD in chemistry is awarded in 1938.

Present Day

The Washington State University Department of Chemistry has a large and active undergraduate mission, educating approximately 5,000 students every year, and our bachelor of science degree program in professional chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society.

In addition to educating students pursuing chemistry degrees and minors, the department provides foundational coursework for undergraduate students across the University studying agriculture, engineering, materials science, biochemistry, food science, and human and animal health sciences.

The BA degree in chemistry was first offered in 2017 and is steadily growing in popularity.

The PhD program offers research opportunities across  Between 2008 and 2015, program nearly doubled in size, to more than 100 students.
